Dragon Quest Your Story Review

Available On: Netflix (English dubbed and English subtitles)

I’m a latecomer to the Dragon Quest series, having played through and enjoyed Dragon Quest 9 and 11, and bits of 7 and 8 via the semi-recent 3DS remasters. But I’m completely unfamiliar with Dragon Quest 5: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (1992), from which the new feature-length animated film Dragon Quest Your Story is based on.

Turning a 40+ hour RPG into a 100 minute film is a daunting task, beginning with the well-known stigma of adapting any video game onto the big (or small) screen, yet Dragon Quest Your Story distills all the game’s major events and fun characters into a film that should please fans and newcomers alike.

Skylanders Academy Season 3 Debuts September 28

While there’s still no news regarding any future console Skylanders games, the Netflix animated series Skylanders Academy is still going strong. Activision Blizzard Studios recently announced that season three will arrive on Netflix on September 28.

The new season brings in new showrunners. Creator Eric Rogers is stepping down, and will be replaced by Clayton Sakoda and Ian Weinreich (Mighty Med). They previously wrote several Skylanders Academy episodes, including the season two premiere.

Season three picks up where season 2’s bombshell cliffhanger ended (SPOILERS!). Spyro was transformed into Dark Spyro when Kaos unleashed a new villainous threat – his own father Strykore. The Skylanders must join forces with Kaos’ mother Kaossandra to combat this new threat. Kaos, meanwhile, becomes a pirate captain in the hopes of proving himself to his powerful father.

While Dark Spyro retains some of the personality of the series star, he’ll be voiced by a different actor: Jason Ritter, instead of Justin Long. The showrunners only tease about the return of the original Spyro.

One of the game’s primary NPCs, Captain Flynn, will finally join the cast in season three. Patrick Warburton and his iconic voice will reprise the role in the animated series. Crash Bandicoot will also return after his cameo appearance back in season one. Since former showrunner Rogers did the voice for season one, comedic actor Rhys Darby will voice Crash Bandicoot in season three.

Skylanders Academy proved so popular that the third season was announced before the second season even aired. I’ve watched several episodes (my daughter devoured the entire series). It’s well-produced and well-written, even if you don’t know your Cynders from your Spyros.

Skylanders Academy airs September 28 on Netflix. The first two season are currently streaming on Netflix. The series is rated TV-Y7.

Skylanders Academy Season 2 Arrives on Netflix October 6

We may not be getting a new Skylanders game this year, but we are getting at least one new form of Skylanders content. The Netflix original animated series, Skylanders Academy, returns with its second season on October 6.

Skylanders Academy is an animated series from Activision Blizzard Studios. It’s based on the world of the popular toys-to-life gaming series.

Skylanders Academy follows Spyro (Justin Long) and his friends, such as Eruptor (Jonathan Banks) and Stealth Elf (Ashley Tisdale) as they learn to become full-fledged Skylanders while thwarting the evil schemes of Kaos (Richard Steven Horvitz) and Glumshanks (Norm MacDonald).

Season two welcomes a new class to the Academy, including Cynder (Felicia Day) and Sprocket (Grey Griffin). Here’s the full description:

Spyro begins a search for information about his ancestors in order to harness and understand his special powers. Meanwhile, Kaos’ quest to bring evil rule to the Skylands realms accidentally unleashes a villain more powerful than anything Kaos or the Skylander warriors have ever faced. The Skylanders unite once more for the greatest showdown against evil yet – putting them all to the ultimate test!

Skylanders Academy season one is still streaming on Netflix. It nails the action-packed Saturday Morning Cartoon vibe really well, and features many heroes and villains from across all six Skylanders games.

Activision Blizzard Studios is a new film and television production company built to adapt the company’s gaming franchises to the big and small screen. Along with Skylanders Academy, a feature film based on Call of Duty is also currently in development.

Earlier this year while season two of Skylanders Academy was still firmly in production, Netflix ordered a third season. Season three will probably air fall of 2018.

The most recent Skylanders game, Skylanders Imaginators, launched last year. You can read our review here.
