FDG Entertainment announced that Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is coming to Mac (Apple Silicon) as well as ipad and iphone iOS mobile devices on June 18 ($24.99).
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is a modern successor to the 16-bit series. It’s a 2D action-platforming adventure starring Jin, a heroic knight whose kingdom is cursed, transforming everyone into anthropomorphic animals.
As Jin adventures through the colorful world, he unlocks the power to transform into multiple animal hybrids. Each form has its own special powers and uses, from the snake fitting into tiny spaces, to the tongue-grappling frog.
The indie adventure has an especially appealing animated art style, with hand drawn animations that look right out of a Saturday Morning Cartoon.
The Apple Silicon version features 120hz, full controller support (including Xbox and PlayStation), keyboard and mouse controls, achievements, and iCloud saves.
In our 2019 review, I called the Cursed Kingdom an “astonishing overhaul” and a “joy to experience.” But the game was brought down by “unforgiving challenges” and “obtuse puzzle designs” that kept it from becoming a modern retro masterpiece.
And just because it looks like a kid’s game, note the Teen rating, and the general difficulty of its platforming.
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is also available on PC (Steam, Epic), PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox, and rated E10+ with Fantasy Violence and Use of Alcohol.
