PQube and developer Mindfuel Games have released roguelike word game, Beyond Words. It’s out now on PC (Steam), PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox.
Beyond Words takes classic Scrabble-like gameplay of placing word tiles on a board to score points, then mixes in a single player, roguelike structure a la Belatro.
By completing games and challenges, players will unlock new upgrades in the form of modifiers, stickers, and enhancements to boost their scores. Boards also have their own challenges, including over 30 boss challenges.
Beyond Words is designed by Steve Ellis and David Doak, whose long-standing resume includes Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark (classic 90s shooters from Rare) and Timesplitters series (classic 2000s shooters from Free Radical). Talk about a genre shift!
“This game started as a simple ‘what if?’ between friends,” said Ellis and Doak, Co-Owners, Mindfuel Games. “We wanted a space to play, iterate, and find the fun – to practice the game-making craft in a small team without external expectations or pressure to make the kind of thing we are known for. We’ve always been big fans of classic word games and twisting the genre in a new direction has been a refreshing creative journey. We’re proud of what we’ve made and hope people enjoy playing Beyond Words as much as we enjoyed making it.”
Beyond Words isn’t the first game to combine Belatro with classic tabletop word games. See also Cursed Words for more Boggle-like gameplay.
Beyond Words is out now on Steam, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox, and rated E for Everyone.
