One of the best free-to-play Battle Royale shooters is now on Nintendo Switch. The Switch launch of Apex Legends kicks off in the middle of Season 8, which added the 16th playable character, and welcomes a new limited time event across all platforms.

Like other ports, Apex Legends needed a downgrade to run on the semi-handheld platform. The multiplayer shooter caps at 30 fps at 720p resolution while docked, and 576p resolution in handheld mode. Controls take advantage of the Joy-Con gyroscope for aim assist.

To entice new Switch players, anyone playing from Switch will receive a Legendary Pathfinder skin, 30 free levels of the Season 8 Battle Pass, and double XP during the first two weeks. The development team also released a Beginner Guide video for newcomers (above).

In addition to the seasonal battle pass, Season 8 added the 16th Legend, Fuse, who specializes in explosives. Season 8 also added the 30-30 repeater rifle, and a revamped version of the original King’s Canyon map.

“It’s been two years since we launched Apex Legend sand we have continued to push the genre forward in meaningful and innovative ways season-to-season with new Legends, maps, weapons, unique modes and much more,” said Chad Grenier, Game Director, Respawn. “We’re also continuing to bring the game to more players on new platforms and with the Nintendo Switch launch, being able to drop in during the current season is a huge win for us. We’re excited to give players a chance to suit up as their favorite Legend even if they are away from their living room. We’ve got a lot of exciting surprises in store this year and we’re going to continue giving players even more ways to compete and for those new to the game more reasons to come play.”

Apex Legends was developed by Respawn Entertainment, with the Switch port handled by Panic Button. Apex Legends is free-to-download with optional purchasable battle passes of unlockable goodies. The multiplayer game supports cross-platform play between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. It’s rated T for Teen.
