Runic Games may have recently shut down, but the Torchlight series lives on. Perfect World Entertainment has announced a new game in the Torchlight series: Torchlight Frontiers. It’s coming to PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. No release date has been announced, but the main website mentions 2019.

Torchlight Frontiers is described as a “shared world action-RPG.” Judging from the trailer it uses the similar colorful art style as the original games. The shared world part points to an online only game with persistent servers and procedurally generated worlds. Players will join forces to hack and slash their way through hordes of enemies. And of course, there will be pets.

The game is being developed by Echtra Games, the new studio born from the ashes of Torchlight developers Runic Games. Echtra is headed by Max Schaefer, former Blizzard North and Runic Games co-founder.

“Evolving the Torchlight universe into a shared world has always been a goal for the franchise, and I’m excited that we’re finally able to make it a reality,” said Max Schaefer, CEO of Echtra Games. “Torchlight Frontiers will be a living, breathing universe that will still feel uniquely Torchlight, while we add our own creative spin to the game. The team is building something truly special, and we can’t wait for fans to play it for the first time at Gamescom and PAX West.”

Torchlight Frontiers will be playable for the first time at Gamescom in Germany (Aug. 21-25) and PAX West in Seattle, WA (Aug. 31 – Sep. 2). You can sign up for the Beta at the Torchlight Frontiers website.
