Digital games on Steam are given sales all the time, but rarely is it for a good cause. The indie developers behind underwater survival game Subnautica, Unknown Worlds Entertainment, are hosting a weekend sale to raise funds for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC). The sale ends June 11.
With the sale, Subnautica is currently 20% off, down to $19.99. The developers will donate 15% of the profits to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation. The WDC works to keep whales and dolphins free from human-based threats, such as whaling and pollution. Aquatic mammals are among the most intelligent creatures on the planet, capable of complex social behaviors and self-awareness.
“Subnautica has been incredibly popular with our supporters in the gaming community and the broadcasters and fundraisers who have taken part in our Gamers for Orcas fundraisers, so we are delighted to be working with the team behind Subnautica on a special promotion this World Oceans Day,” said Abbie Cheesman, manager at WDC. “We are so grateful for their generous support of our vital work to help protect our oceans and the amazing marine wildlife that call them home at such a critical time for many whale and dolphin species.”
Subnautica originally launched on Steam Early Access back in late 2014. A little over three years later it emerged with a full release earlier this year to positive reviews. It still boasts thousands of players at any one time on Steam. It’s also available via Xbox Games Preview on Xbox One, and coming to PlayStation 4 later this year.
The WDC sale ends June 11.
