One of the most cherished JRPGs from the 90s is getting a full 3D remake. Square Enix has announced Secret of Mana with all-new 3D graphics and English voices (with Japanese available). It’s coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC (Steam) on February 15, 2018.
The new Secret of Mana remake will include upgraded gameplay for modern systems as well as a newly arranged soundtrack. The remake will also support local multiplayer, letting up to two friends join in to control the other two party members.
Pre-orders for Secret of Mana are available later today. If you pre-order you’ll receive two sets of DLC costumes for the three protagonists: Moogle Suits and Tiger Suits. PlayStation pre-orders will also receive three avatars of the three characters.
Secret of Mana originally launched on the Super Nintendo in 1993. Next year will mark the series’ 25th anniversary. Secret of Mana was memorable for its bright visual style and action-oriented combat. It’s considered one of the best Japanese RPGs in an era that also gave us Chrono Trigger and the best Final Fantasy games.
The remake news is tempered by a lack of Switch support. The most recent news about Secret of Mana was the Seiken Densetsu Collection releasing on Nintendo Switch in Japan. Unfortunately the collection still hasn’t been ported to English. Given Secret of Mana’s original appearance on a Nintendo console and its whimsical family-friendly story and visual style, it’s disappointing that this new remake isn’t coming to Nintendo Switch. At least for now.
Secret of Mana will be playable at PAX West at the Square Enix and PlayStation booths next weekend. It launches February 15, 2018 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC.
