Ubisoft has announced that their hit game, The Division, will receive a new expansion called “Survival” later this year. The Division was one of the most hyped game franchises in the last handful of years. It started with a gorgeous and haunting reveal trailer and the excitement was maintained through a steady drip of gameplay trailers. However, when the game hits shelves there were some fans that were underwhelmed by the lack of content. The Survival expansion is one attempt to right the ship and give people the content they want so they will keep playing.

The gameplay hook in Survival is, essentially, a new gameplay mode where players are challenged to survive in a new zone with limited resources under extreme weather conditions. The idea of struggling to find food, water, and shelter alongside ammunition  and other resources in the brutal world of the Division is a departure from the standard gameplay loop in the previous content.

Take a look at the DLC Teaser trailer that was released as part of the E3 2016 event. The teaser itself implies that the Survival Mode will add a sense of urgency and desperation to the gameplay, which would certainly be a change. The question remains, however, whether or not this will be enough of a change to keep people interested.

The release timing gives me pause though. The Division and Destiny, another multiplayer online shooter, share a lot of DNA and have player bases that overlap quite a bit. I have always wondered why these two game makers don’t quietly get together and agree to release content in a staggering fashion. If they alternated months or even business quarters they could avoid eating one another’s lunch and even encourage players to play both games.

I know. I know. The idea of Activision and Ubisoft working together to make something like that happen is absurd, but a man can dream can’t he?

Regardless of their release schedule, The Division is going to be around for a long time so keep your eyes on Pixelkin.org for updates!
