Sky Castle Studios, the team behind digital miniature customizer Hero Forge, has announced tactical RPG Wildmagic Frontier will launch on Kickstarter on September 10. Wildmagic Frontier takes players’ customized miniatures and puts them into a D&D-like tactical-RPG.
The art and setting for Wildmagic Frontier is stylized to look like miniature terrain, like the kind designed for tabletop RPGs. Using fantasy characters, players battle on tactical grids using cards to deploy abilities. Craft new cards to unlock new abilities, recruit companions, complete quests, and engage in turn-based battles in realistic dioramas.
Wildmagic Frontier’s neatest feature is that it supports custom miniatures created via Hero Forge.
Hero Forge is a free digital customization tool that lets players build their own 3D miniature character figure (and order a physical copy, if they wish). Using their free Hero Forge account, players can import their customized figures directly into the upcoming game — a pretty neat feature for folks who always wanted to play with their miniatures!
It also reminds me of a digital version of Skylanders, which I’d really like to see a revival of!
Customizing and importing your own Hero Forge figure is not required, however. Wildmagic Frontier will also include a “wide range of premade archetypes.”
This is also NOT a free-to-play/freemium game. As stated on the Kickstarter preview page, Wildmagic Frontier will be a buy-once, complete game. Backers of the campaign will receive a digital code to access the game when it’s ready to launch.
Wildmagic Frontier will eventually release on PC, playable on browsers and Steam. The Kickstarter campaign will launch on September 10.
