Lingokids, the popular children’s entertainment and learning platform, has released the Kids Interactive Entertainment Report, detailing screentime and interactivity among children age 8 and under, and how modern parents view screentime.
The report is based on surveys from over 2,000 parents, as well as data from 20 million families on the Lingokids app.
The report shows that about three fourths of parents (73%) believe that interactive screentime, aka gaming, puzzles, and creative tools, are better for their kids than passively watching shows and videos (or scrolling through content).
We at Pixelkin would certainly agree!
“It’s now been 10 years since we started Lingokids. In that time, kids’ screentime has changed dramatically and it continues to evolve,” said Cristóbal Viedma, CEO and founder of Lingokids. “Today, about two-thirds of Gen Alpha’s screentime is interactive, which parents overwhelmingly feel is a positive thing. With more than 98% of families now using screentime for young kids, the most important question has become the quality of the content.”
The report also highlights the screen-guilt paradox: “98% of parents allow screen time and 84.6% feel guilty about it. The problem isn’t the screens. It’s the content. Parents don’t trust that their kids’ screen time is quality time. As that changes, we’ll see guilt decrease.” said Dr. Diana Barrett, Child Psychologist.
The top concern for parents and their kids’ screentime is safety, with over half feeling that anything can get on a children’s platform.
Take this with a grain of salt given the host of the report, but Lingokids was rated as the #1 platform parents say yes to for screentime, followed by PBS Kids and ABCmouse (We like PBS Kids in our house). Streaming service Disney+ hovers at around 52%, while YouTube, Roblox, and Minecraft are much lower choices, around 30%.
The most popular characters for Gen Alpha include Bluey, Mickey Mouse, and SpongeBob. Boys tend to like superheroes such as Spider-man and Batman, while Girls gravitate to Barbie and Disney princesses.
