Nintendo hosted a Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct this week, showcasing the upcoming life sim game, including the release date. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will release on April 16 on Nintendo Switch (also compatible with Switch 2).
Tomodachi Life is all about the Miis, those quirky little avatars from back in the Nintendo Wii era (and the Wii U and 3DS). Players can fully customize Mii characters, whether through answering a series of questions about their facial features, or diving into the character creator directly.
Mii characters also feature sliders for height and body type, energy level, voice pitch, and more. Also, Miis have ears now!
Players can select either male, female, or nonbinary options for gender, as well as which of those three they are attracted to. This is the first time the series supports same-sex romantic relationships, and nonbinary gender identity.
Customized Mii characters then populate your island. Each Mii features a weird, autotuney voice that I find frankly deeply unsettling.
Once you drop them near each other, they’ll begin to interact over shared interests. Up to eight characters can even live together as roommates who share a home, which sounds like the premise for a weekly 22-minute drama.
Aside from homes, Miis can also enjoy several different shops and buildings. Where & Wear clothing features new outfits. T&C Reno home supply offers new home customization options, and Foto-Tomo photography offers lots of photo mode opportunities. Players can also tune into the MNN news station for weird stories that use their Miis. Seriously, this game is weird!
Players can also customize the island itself, expanding and reshaping it, as well as adding trees, benches, playground rides, and more.
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is the long-awaited follow-up to 2014’s Tomodachi Life on the Nintendo 3DS. Living the Dream is out April 16 on Switch.
