Indie developer RuniQ have released Heroes of Mount Dragon, a side-scrolling beat ’em up, on Steam. It’s available with a 20% launch discount through July 9.

Set in the fantasy world of Üna, players are heroic Dragon-Souls, might warriors who can transform into a special dragon form. Each hero specializes in their own gameplay style and combo moves, from heavy brutes to fast hitters, and can transform into their dragon forms to unleash new special abilities.

Judging by the description and trailer, the gameplay looks inspired by fighting games and action games as much as classic beat ’em ups. The steam page promises the gameplay is accessible for all skill levels.

During battle, players can also activate power-ups and curses that change the battlefield, such as shrinking or polymorphing enemies.

Up to four players can join forces via local and online co-op. In a neat twist, co-op isn’t the only option, however! Heroes of Mount Dragon includes a competitive modes to challenge your friends.

The launch version includes four playable characters, with four additional characters coming post-launch.

The game is based on the Heroes of Mount Dragon universe, a French series of novels and board games aimed at tweens and teens. The series feature eight heroes, one from each kingdom, uniting against a common threat.

The Canadian indie studio includes veteran game developers from Activision, Ubisoft, and other studios. Their collective game credits include Skylanders, Spider-Man, Guitar Hero, and Call of Duty. Heroes of Mount Dragon is their debut title.
