Good news for developers; bad news for gamers: Grand Theft Auto 6 has been officially delayed. The new release date for GTA 6 is (tentatively?) May 26, 2026.
Developer Rockstar Games posted the following announcement:
We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.
With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto 6 is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.
Grand Theft Auto 6 has been in active development since the release of Rockstar’s last game, Red Dead Redemption 2, in 2018. The first trailer for GTA 6 was revealed in December 2023, along with a 2025 release date.
Since that Dec. 2023 reveal, Rockstar Games has been quiet, which isn’t unusual. The juggernaut developer makes some of the most well-known, critically acclaimed, and best selling games of all time, and Grand Theft Auto is their flagship series.
The last game in the series, Grand Theft Auto 5, released way back in 2013. It became a gaming phenomenon, and the second best-selling game of all time (behind Minecraft), thanks in large part to its new multiplayer component, Grand Theft Auto Online. Currently on Steam, there are still over 50,000 people playing GTA 5 Enhanced, and over 90k playing the original PC release.
What we know is that GTA 6 is a return to the Miami-inspired streets of Vice City, last seen in 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for PlayStation 2. The open world urban adventure stars a new criminal duo, including the series’ first scripted female protagonist.
Barring further delays, Grand Theft Auto 6 will release on May 26, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Prepare for an onslaught of game release re-shuffles and announcements as a result of this news!
