Rockstar Games officially confirmed Grand Theft Auto 6 as the name of the next game in the GTA series, one of the best-selling video game series of all time. The first trailer released slightly early last night due to leaks (originally due to release this morning), and also teases the game’s release date: 2025.

Hey we’re practically in 2024, that’s not too bad!

They lengthy trailer confirms rumors of the game’s setting as Vice City, last seen in 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Whereas GTA 4’s Liberty City is an NYC parody, and San Andreas from GTA 5 covers California, Vice City is a satire of Miami. Though it looks like all of Florida is getting represented with huge beaches, swampland, and loose gators. In GTA’s universe, the state is named “Leonida.”

GTA 6 also continues GTA 5’s tradition of multiple protagonists, this time focusing on a boyfriend and girlfriend criminal duo. The first trailer focuses mostly on the woman, Lucia. She’s the series first female protagonist since the start of the 3D era in 2001.

GTA 5 starred three different (male) criminals, and players could swap between them at any time between missions.

“Grand Theft Auto 6 continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences,” said Sam Houser, Founder, Rockstar Games. “We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.”

Grand Theft Auto 6 is due to launch in 2025 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It’s not yet rated, but there’s zero chance this crime-happy series isn’t M for Mature.
