Bad news for DC fans. In a statement to Kotaku, Warner Bros. Games confirmed the upcoming Wonder Woman game has been canceled amidst the decision to shut down three of its game studios. The news was originally reported by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg.

The news comes on the heel of the recent sunsetting of online arena brawler, MultiVersus, developed by Player First Games. Monolith Productions (Shadow of Mordor) and WB San Diego were the other affected studios.

We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building the best games possible with our key franchises -– Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones. After careful consideration, we are closing three of our development studios – Monolith Productions, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them.

The development of Monolith’s Wonder Woman video game will not move forward. Our hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities. This is another tough decision, as we recognize Monolith’s storied history of delivering epic fan experiences through amazing games. We greatly admire the passion of the three teams and thank every employee for their contributions. As difficult as today is, we remain focused on and excited about getting back to producing high-quality games for our passionate fans and developed by our world class studios and getting our Games business back to profitability and growth in 2025 and beyond.

Wonder Woman was initially teased back in 2021 as a single player, open world action game. It would utilize Monolith’s fan-favorite Nemesis System from Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. Monolith Productions was founded 30 years ago, in 1994.

It’s no secret that Warner Bros has had a rough time in games lately. MultiVersus failed to capture an audience for its live service seasonal updates, while Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League wasn’t sure if it was a single player adventure or a live service game. Similarly, Quidditch Champions had a nice launch boosted by PS Plus, but player counts quickly dropped the following week. Warner Bros. Games last major hit game was Hogwarts Legacy in 2023.

Warner Bros. Games still includes Avalanche Software (Hogwarts Legacy), Rocksteady Studios (Batman Arkham series), TT Games (LEGO games), NetherRealm Studios (Mortal Kombat series), and several more internal studios.
