One of gaming’s most cherished personalities, Shirley Curry, also known as Skyrim Grandma, has announced her retirement from making Skyrim gaming videos.

Curry announced her retirement during a heartfelt Vlog update, “No More Gaming Videos,” on her YouTube channel:

“The other thing that I want to say is — something that I feel I have to do. I don’t think you’re going to like it either. But I can’t help it. I’m old. And I’m tired. And I don’t feel like doing much anymore. […] [Playing Skyrim] isn’t fun any more. I’m not going to be making any more game videos.”

Curry has upcoming eye surgery, but more importantly, she reveals that making game videos were becoming more of an obligation than something she does for fun and enjoyment.

Her first Skyrim gameplay video was posted 9 years ago in 2015, and she has been active on YouTube ever since. Her popularity exploded during the pandemic, and she hit 1 million subscribers in 2022.

The Skyrim Grandma made waves in 2019 when Bethesda invited her to to their studio to get scanned into The Elder Scrolls 6 and immortalized as an NPC. You can also download a free Shirley Skyrim follower mod on Nexus Mods.

Annoyingly, the follow-up to The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim (which released in 2011) is still deep in development, with exactly zero updates since its initial announcement in 2018. In years past, Curry expressed her desire to play The Elder Scrolls 6.

Curry will continue to release Vlog videos and updates, but it looks like her video gaming days may be over. She is living the dream for a lot of aging gamers, and injecting wholesome gaming goodness into YouTube, where it’s often in short supply.

Thank you, Skyrim Grandma, and may you continue to enjoy retirement!
