Age of Wonders 4 is only a few months old, a newborn in 4X years, yet has received its first DLC expansion. Paradox Interactive and Triumph Studios have released the Dragon Dawn expansion, adding draconic rulers, tomes, factions, and realms.

Dragon Dawn is all about dragons, which are conspicuously absent from the base game of Age of Wonders 4. Lizardfolk are a new race players can choose to make their faction look more reptilian, while Dragon Rulers are an all new leader type that features new skills, equipment, transformation, and events as you play a literal dragon. Nice!

Two new tomes add a host of spells and upgrades to research. The Tome of Evolution adds new units that transform and grow stronger as they level. The Tome of Dragons, well, adds dragons! Summon dragons, transform into dragons, and wield the powers of a dragon. Is that redundant if you’re playing as a dragon, or does it make you even more dragon-y?

The DLC also adds a new story realm, called the Ashen War. The Ashen War features six elder dragons vying for supremacy. I assume you’ll want to be the last one standing.

Dragon Dawn is available separately ($9.99) and as part of the Premium Edition. It’s the first of three planned expansion packs.

Age of Wonders 4 also received another free update, the Wyvern Update, featuring several quality of life improvements and fixes, as well as an option to just tool around with the faction creator.

Age of Wonders 4 is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
