One of the biggest developers and publishers on the planet is the victim of a major security leak. Video footage of the next Grand Theft Auto game was stolen from Rockstar Games and was partially leaked online over the weekend. On Monday, Rockstar Games issued an official statement confirming the leak:

GTA 6 is still in the middle of development. Rockstar Games is known for spending years on a single, massive game. No official gameplay footage has been released.

We’re not going to link to the leaked videos (which have since been taken down), but the 90(!) leaked videos confirm the rumors that GTA 6 will take place in a fictionalized version of Miami, not unlike 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and will feature a playable female protagonist for the first time in the series.

Although GTA 6 is not the first game to suffer this PR and developer-nightmare, Rockstar Games is easily the highest-profile developer to get hit with it.

The GTA series is one of the most well-known in gaming, with each game in the series becoming an instant best-seller. The series is known for its open world gameplay, cinematic storytelling, and M-rating.

Thanks to GTA 5’s online component, people continue to play a game that is nearly 10 years old to this day.

Hopefully the leak won’t cause any massive delays in what is surely going to be one of the biggest games of the next generation.
