The grand finale of the Xbox + Bethesda Games Showcase revealed our first gameplay video for Bethesda Game Studios’ upcoming massive single-player RPG, Starfield. Watch the new 15-minute gameplay reveal and developer commentary above.

In the year 2330, you play as a space explorer as part of the group known as Constellation, on a mission of discovery. And there’s a lot to discover.

In typical Bethesda fashion the world is huge, but it’s not just one world we’ll be visiting. Over 1,000 planets in over 100 star systems throughout the galaxy can be journeyed to, landed on, and explored.

Our spaceship is fully customizable with different models and pieces, and the RPG will feature full space flight controls and combat.

Exploring huge numbers of planets in a full-flight spaceship instantly evokes memories of No Man’s Sky. Yet the on-foot gameplay resembles a Bethesda Fallout game, with first-person shooting, health bars, and experience. Judging by what we know so far, Starfield aims for a more realistic look at sci-fi space exploration (fewer aliens, for one).

The skill system promises to combine the best of Skyrim and Fallout’s skill perks and progression.

“It’s been an incredible journey for us making it, but we know that’s only the beginning, for it’s when all of you play it that the journey begins,” said Todd Howard.

Starfield will launch exclusively on PC and Xbox Series X/S in the first half of 2023.
