Nintendo has a long-standing tradition of licensing their characters for cereal boxes. I remember first learning about one of the secret warp whistles for Super Mario Bros, 3 from the back of a cereal box. But I never had anything like this. For a limited time beginning December 11, special Kellogg’s limited edition Super Mario Cereal will include amiibo scans for Super Mario Odyssey.

“This powered-up partnership with Kellogg’s is another exciting way for us to expand the Nintendo brand in unique and creative ways,” said Tom Prata, Nintendo of America’s Senior VP of Strategic Initiatives. “We are always looking for new opportunities to bring smiles to people of all ages, and this is a fun way to kick off the day.”

The cereal is basically Lucky Charms, featuring marshmallow pieces inspired by Super Mario powerups. The outer box’s amiibo symbol can be scanned into Super Mario Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch as if it were an amiibo figure. The in-game reward is similar if you scan a non-specific amiibo, resulting in coins or hearts.

“We are thrilled to pack so much fun into one box of cereal,” said Brad Schwan, Senior Director of Morning Foods Marketing. “The package adds value and excitement for fans, with marshmallow shapes in the cereal inspired by Super Mario power-ups to tie the theme together.”

Super Mario Cereal will start hitting store shelves as early as next week.
