Sony has revealed that Spider-Man will be coming back to video games. The game was announced as part of Sony’s E3 media briefing. Highly regarded developer Insomniac is making the game.

Spider-Man is all about swinging through the city and dispatching bad guys with nothing other than your fists and the environment around you. The trailer that was shown at Sony’s press conference showed us a game that does just that. It looks to “get” what Spider-Man is all about.

Superhero games have had a rocky past. It wasn’t apparent until Warner Bros’ Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009 that games based on comic book characters could actually be good. Now it looks like Spider-Man could be following in Batman’s footsteps, especially since the game is coming from a top-tier developer.

Insomniac is one of my favorite developers and I’m not alone. They’re an independent studio who has released a number of Sony-exclusive games like the Ratchet & Clank franchise. They jumped the fence and released Sunset Overdrive as an Xbox One exclusive in 2014. But now they’re back on the Sony side. It’s no surprise that Insomniac is at the helm, as open world exploration has been one of their strong suits. There was a bit of it in the Ratchet & Clank games and a lot of it in Sunset Overdrive. Even the swinging mechanic is something they’ve done in Ratchet & Clank.

Unfortunately no release date was given.
