Curious trademark filings are often fertile grounds for new game rumors. Sure enough, Agents of Mayhem has been revealed through an IGN exclusive reveal. You can watch the lengthy cinematic trailer above (strong language).

The multiple heroes and fun, cartoony art style suggest another multiplayer hero shooter. But Agents of Mayhem is a pure single-player action game, like Volition’s popular Saints Row franchise. The agents seem like a fun, irreverent bunch, and exactly what we’d expect coming from the makers of Saints Row’s quirky cast.

The action takes place in futuristic Seoul filled with automated robots, drones, and lots of crazy stunts. The smarmy villain acts like he just waltzed out of a Marvel comic book, and I absolutely love it. Doctor Babylon is the minister of L.E.G.I.O.N. – the League of Evil Gentlemen Intent on Obliterating Nations. M.A.Y.H.E.M. is a goofy acronym too – the Multinational Agency for Hunting Evil Masterminds. The smoking woman shown at the end is Persephone Brimstone. I love this game already.

agents of mayhemIGN mentions using your three squad mates and their unique abilities and weaponry together. They also tease a possible tie to the Saints Row universe – which was left in a precarious place after the Earth-shattering events of Saints Row 4.

I was a big fan of the Saints Row games, and Volition have steadily improved throughout each iteration. They have a great handle on what makes big games bombastic and fun, with silly stories, likable characters, and memorable action scenes.

More information about Agents of Mayhem is expected to trickle in as we hover around E3 2016. Release date is tentatively 2017 for PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One.
