One of the hallmarks of the Madden NFL series of games is the selection of a well-known athlete to appear on the cover. This year’s honoree will be revealed on ESPN SportsCenter on May 12.

Besides the cover athlete, Electonic Arts also plans to reveal the first gameplay details for Madden NFL 17 during SportsCenter as well. Previous athletes to grace the Madden games’ covers include Odell Beckham Jr., Richard Sherman, Barry Sanders and Adrian Peterson.

The Madden NFL games are one of the longest-running franchises in video game history. The first game was released in 1988 for MS-DOS PCs. Since then a game in the series has been released every single year. The games have appeared on pretty much every gaming console including iOS and Android devices. However, the most recent games have skipped the Wii U as a console.

The game is named after John Madden, a storied member of the NFL, who lent his voice to the in-game commentary for most of the series life, having only been replaced in the most recent versions of the game.

Madden NFL 17 is scheduled for release on August 23. The May 12 reveal will be broadcast on ESPN SportsCenter, which airs at 6 p.m. ET.
