Dungeon Defenders: Awakened Review

Available On: PC (Steam), coming later to Switch (Q3 2020), PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (Q4 2020)

What is the difference between a new game and a remake? Despite being labeled as an all-new game in the tower-defense series, Dungeon Defenders: Awakened is clearly a remake of the original 2010 game.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the original Dungeon Defenders effectively combined tower defense gameplay with co-op action. The formula remains as fun as it was a decade ago, though it’s disappointing to see so little improvement or changes.

Dungeon Defenders: Awakened Leaving Steam Early Access May 28

After a few months in Steam Early Access, Dungeon Defenders: Awakened is ready for a full release. The co-op tower defense-RPG will officially leave Early Access on May 28, with the same $39.99 price tag. Console versions will launch later this year.

Dungeon Defenders: Awakened is the long-awaited threequel to the colorful co-op series. Etheria once again needs defending against waves of monsters. Players can switch between four different heroes, each with their own weapons, abilities, and towers. During the build phase towers and traps can be constructed around the map to whittle down enemy forces that advance during the combat phase, where players can jump in and work to repel them.

Up to four players can join together in online matches, unlocking new abilities and towers and collecting new weapons and pets.

Running on Unreal Engine 4, Awakened features a new story, updated visuals, and revised gameplay. The 1.0 update adds a surge of new content, including new bosses, strategy modes, difficulty levels, pets, and challenge maps.

“Dungeon Defenders: Awakened is the culmination of everything we’ve learned from working on the series for more than a decade now,” said Augi Lye, CEO, Chromatic Games. “We’ve taken the framework of the original Dungeon Defenders and built it into something entirely its own. We cannot wait to share it with experienced Defenders and newcomers alike on May 28!”

Dungeon Defenders: Awakened is available now on PC (Steam Early Access) and will enter 1.0 on May 28. It’s coming later this year to PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.

Sleep Tight Review

Available On: PC, Switch

Sleep Tight presents the classic monster-in-the-closet tale and transforms it into a kid-themed tower defense game, married with the gun-play of a twin-stick shooter. Both aspects are decently executed if a bit shallow, and the theme of defending your bedroom against an onslaught of Pixar-friendly monsters is a fun one.

Yet Sleep Tight lacks the mechanical depth of other tower defense games, and surviving against the hordes is more of an exercise in quantity over quality.
