During Gamescom 2026, Paradox Interactive announced Afterworld, a grand strategy game set in a post-apocalyptic future where North America has fallen. A release date has not yet been announced.

Every game of Afterworld generates a new North American wasteland. The basic geography remains the same, but with different resources, tribes, and dangers.

As the leaders of an emerging tribe, players must rediscover civilization while scavenging for food and supplies. Different tribe origins are available, including the survivors of a nuclear bunker, or wasteland zealots who worship a goddess of the dustlands

Players will define the laws and ethics of their tribe as they come across other growing empires. Unlock new advances by exploration with the Ideas Tree, making your playthrough reflect your tribe’s abilities and experiences.

Afterworld also supports co-op and competitive multiplayer.

A “grand strategy game” is a subset of real-time strategy with a wider focus on empire management over a long period of time. Most games in the genre are based on specific time periods in history, with the major exception of Paradox’s 2016 sci-fi strategy game, Stellaris.

“Afterworld is Paradox’s first non-historical setting in a decade, and I can’t wait to see what stories our players will tell with it,” said Dan Lind, Game Director at Paradox Development Studio. “This is the first world we’ve gotten to build from scratch in a long time, and the first one we’ve had the pleasure of destroying before the game starts. The old world is still out there in fragments, waiting to be found. What comes after it is entirely up to the players.”

A release date for Afterworld has not yet been announced.
