Sonic Team and Sega have released arcade racing game, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. A digital Switch 2 version is coming this holiday season, with a physical Switch 2 release dropping early next year.
CrossWorlds is a kart racing game, similar to Mario Kart and Disney Speedstorm, and a successor to 2019’s Team Sonic Racing.
CrossWorlds’ signature new feature are Travel Rings. Travel Rings are giant ring-portals (familiar to fans of the Sonic games and movies) that teleport racers to a different world (and track) in the middle of the race, then reverting back to the original course for the final lap.
By gathering regular-size rings players can increase their speed, losing them if they collide with obstacles, or other racers.
Players can compete with up to 12 players in multiple modes, including four-player split-screen co-op. Grand Prix features seven cups of four races each, while World Match features an online leaderboard for competitive multiplayer.
The racing game launches with 24 playable characters from the Sonic universe. More characters are planned from across the Sega pantheon, including Joker from Persona 5, and Kasuga from Yakuza.
The Digital Deluxe Edition unlocks three characters from Sonic Prime. It also includes the Season Pass with future licensed racers, vehicles, and courses, including Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants, Mega Man, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is $59.99 on Nintendo Switch, and $69.99 on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch 2. It’s rated E for Everyone.
