Who knew a little non-Nintendo platformer would end up being one of the best reviewed games of the year? Sony’s Astro Bot, the full-priced sequel to the PlayStation 5 bundle game Astro’s Playroom (and PSVR game, Astro Bot Rescue Mission), is currently sitting at an astonishing 95 average critic score from gaming aggregate website OpenCritic, and a 94 on Metacritic. Wow!

That puts Astro Bot just behind some of the best all-time 3D platformers: Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Odyssey.

In other words, the little robot sequel is one of the best 3D platformers ever made. Big congrats to developer Team ASOBI!

In Astro Bot, Astro journeys between galaxies and planets to rescue over 300 Bots. About half the bots feature fun character references from past PlayStation games, such as Aloy from Horizon, and Kratos from God of War. Some of these special Bots are featured in certain levels, utilizing their familiar abilities and weapons.

The PlayStation V.I.P. Bots (and Astro Bot’s release) celebrate PlayStation’s 30th anniversary.

Like Astro’s Playroom, Astro Bot also takes full advantage of the platform, and especially the DualSense controller, including haptic feedback, built-in speakers, and adaptive triggers. Astro even flies to new planets on a DualSense controller!

Astro Bot is available exclusively on PlayStation 5 in Standard ($59.99) and Digital Deluxe Editions ($69.99). The Digital Deluxe Edition includes special in-game outfits, PSN avatars, digital soundtracks, and art gallery.

Astro Bot is rated E10+ with Crude Humor and Fantasy Violence.
