Sega has released Sonic Superstars, a multiplayer-friendly, 2D platforming game inspired by the original Sonic the Hedgehog adventures of the early 90s (and the more recent Sonic Mania).
Sonic Superstars is available physically and digitally for PC, PlayStation, Switch, and Xbox ($59.99).
The evil Dr. Eggman is up to his old tricks, this time teaming up with the villainous Fang in the Northstar Islands.
Sonic, along with allies Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, race through enemies and obstacles with the help of new Emerald Powers. These abilities grant new powers, such as swimming up waterfalls, gaining super strength, or making clones.
Superstars is a side-scrolling platforming adventure, though “2D” is a bit reductive, as it uses entirely 3D graphics and UHD visuals (creating a 2.5D look). While the game is clearly inspired from some of Sonic’s best original entries, it features all new zones, gameplay, and music tracks.
Superstars’ signature feature is co-op multiplayer. Not only can players choose their favorite Sonic ally, but they can play together in up to four-player local co-op (not unlike the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Wonder). A new battle mode also supports up to eight players locally or online.
Sonic Superstars is available in Standard and Digital Deluxe Editions. The deluxe edition ($69.99) includes LEGO skins of our heroes, mech parts for battle mode, digital artbook, and main menu wallpapers.
