Disney finally has its eyes set on Magic: The Gathering. Global tabletop publisher Ravensburger has announced a new partnership with Disney to produce a new trading card game (TCG). Disney Lorcana will release in Fall 2023. We’ll get our first look at the game during the D23 expo in September.

Disney Lorcana is aimed at a family-friendly audience with a storybook art style. The press release mentions being less confrontational than Magic, while still being a strategy card game.

The world of Lorcana is set in “The Great Illuminary,” which includes a record of all Disney stories. Players become Illumineers as they weave these stories and characters together. How that translates to a competitive, collectible strategy game remains to be seen.

Ravensburger has previously collaborated with Disney to produce the Disney Villainous board game in 2018. The result was a big success featuring several year’s worth of expansions, along with Marvel and, most recently, Star Wars editions.

“Disney Lorcana is the result of the powerful alchemy of Disney magic, Ravensburger game excellence, and several years of dedicated work and investment,” says Filip Francke, chief executive officer, Ravensburger North America. “This potent combination has poised Disney Lorcana to be a game-changer in the billion-dollar-plus trading card game market.”

Most recently mobile game Disney Mirrorverse also featured a theme combining all Disney stories and characters battling together (including Disney-Pixar, but without Marvel or Star Wars).

The first set for Disney Lorcana is set to release in Fall 2023.
