Colorful action-platformer Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is out today on PC (Steam, GoG) for $29.99, not including a 10% launch sale price.

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is a new entry in the classic 16-bit action-adventure series from the 90s. The land is cursed, turning everyone into animals, but granting young warrior Jin the power to gain new animal forms as he journeys through dungeons, swamps, seas, and mountains battling enemies and uncovering secrets.

The 20+ hour campaign is perhaps a bit too long with some nasty difficulty spikes, but it’s a gorgeous-looking throwback (read our review).

Jin can eventually unlock six different forms, each with their own abilities and uses both in and out of combat, such as a flying dragon, a spell-casting pig, and a tiny snake. Each form and enemy is given hand drawn animations and facial expressions in a colorful 2D style.

The PC version includes support for ultra wide screens, unlocked framerates, and full controller support for PlayStation 4, Switch, Steam Controller, and Xbox One controllers. Given the platforming genre, a controller is highly recommended, though the PC version does support mouse and keyboard controls.

Monster Boy is out now on PC. It’s also available on PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One. It’s rated E10+.
