Sega has infamously fumbled with the Sonic franchise for the last two decades. The once prominent mascot for the Sega Genesis, and the video game company overall, has struggled through some tough times. The struggle continues with the reveal of the first official trailer for the upcoming live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film.
Judging by the trailer, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) is either an alien or from another dimension, now in our world. He teams up with a sheriff (James Marsden) in the small town of Green Hills. Together they have to evade the US government, specifically the machinations of robotics expert and inventor Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey).
The final shot of the trailer reveals Dr. Robotnik’s more familiar design with blown-out mustache. It also looks like its teasing an alternate world in the background.
The track record for video game movie adaptions is abysmally low and this trailer doesn’t exactly make us hopeful. Sonic’s toothy, hairy, muscular design is causing a lot of distress among fans, though Carrey in full 90s era Jim Carrey mode as Robotnik looks fun.
The initial trailer reaction is mixed, as the video is currently hovering at a 50% Likes rating on YouTube.
The film as not yet been rated by the MPAA. Sonic the Hedgehog is directed by Jeff Fowler and will be released by Paramount Pictures on November 8, 2019.
