Indie publishers Funcom and developers Bearded Ladies have revealed their new tactical adventure game, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden. It’s arriving later this year on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
Mutant Year Zero aims to combine the turn-based tactical strategy of games like XCOM and Mario + Rabbids with a deep storyline set in a post-human Earth ravaged by nuclear war. Players take on the role of anthropomorphic mutant characters who would like right at home in the Ninja Turtles universe. That’s no coincidence as the world of Mutant Year Zero is officially based on the Mutant franchise of tabletop RPGs from the 80s.
“It’s an unusual label for a game, but tactical adventure really fits the bill, no duck pun intended,” says Executive Producer Ulf Andersson at Bearded Ladies. “Our goal is to blend the deep and tactical combat of ‘XCOM’ with a branching storyline that unfolds as you explore overgrown forests and abandoned cities with your team of Mutants. Mixing that with real-time stealth gameplay gives you a unique way to approach or avoid combat situations you encounter while exploring.”
Swedish developer Bearded Ladies is made up of the designers of the Himan and Payday series.
The first gameplay demo of Mutant Year Zero will be presented by Funcom at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco later this month.
Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden will be available later this year on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. No firm release date has yet been given.
