Yo-Kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters is launching this fall for Nintendo 3DS. It’s the third version of Yo-Kai Watch 2, after last year’s Fleshy Souls and Bony Spirits. Similiar to the upcoming launch of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Yo-Kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters includes an extended version of the game with new quests, new Yo-Kai, new locations, and an improved co-op mode. An exact release date has not yet been announced.
Nintendo has revealed some details about what’s included in this new version:
- 15 Wicket Yo-Kai; now you can befriend the boss monsters from Yo-Kai Watch 2, bringing the total number of playable Yo-Kai to over 300.
- 12 new quests, including exploring the origins of Darknyan, bringing the total quest count to over 100.
- New locations, including the new Gera Gera Resort.
- Expanded version of Yo-Kai Watch Blasters co-op mode, with new bosses.
If you still have save data from Bony Spirits and/or Fleshy Souls, you can also gain access to new dungeons. These dungeons hold special bosses and exclusive Yo-Kai to befriend. Unfortunately Yo-Kai Watch 2’s co-op mode is still local play only.
Yo-Kai Watch 2 features the same gameplay and many of the same locations as the first game, released in North America in 2015. The basic concept is a Pokémon-like collect-a-thon, but with a unique 3-party battle system and a modern setting.
All three versions of Yo-Kai Watch 2 have been available in Japan since 2014, with Yo-Kai Watch 3 releasing in Japan last year.
Given my lackluster experience with the sequel, I’m not sure Psychic Specters is worth a return trip to Springdale. But often these extended/remixed versions become the definitive version. Yo-Kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters could be a solid way to play through if you missed Yo-Kai Watch 2 the first time.
