Rocket League, the playing-soccer-with-cars game that became a surprise hit, has made nearly $50 million, according to a story from The Wall Street Journal.
The game was released back in July on PC and PlayStation 4, and since then has earned itself 8 million registered players.
That $50 million is a huge win for Psyonix, the developers of Rocket League. The studio spent less than $2 million over the course of two years to create the game, while simultaneously doing outside contract work for other games–like Mass Effect 3 and Gears of War.
Rocket League was offered as a free download for PlayStation Plus members back in July, which helped spread its name. YouTube and Twitch personalities also picked up the game, adding to its popularity. At the Game Awards a couple of weeks ago it won the categories of best sports/racing game and best independent game, as well as being nominated for best multiplayer.
