We Want Games to Respond Better!

We discuss Laralyn McWilliams’s very interesting article in Gamasutra, “Games as a Two-Way Conversation.” which is about how games don’t do enough recognize your emotions and respond.  Simone uses Until Dawn, a horror game, as an example that does the two-way conversation better. Simone and Nicole talk about their mutual attraction to Garrus in Mass Effect.

Garrus is quite attractive.

What We Played

Simone played Skylanders SuperChargers.  Look for her upcoming review on Pixelkin. She’s also trying to get through Life Is Strange.

Linda played games that are supposed to relieve stress, including Flowy, Kaleidoscope Drawing Pad, and Zen Koi. And also Ori and the Blind Forest.

Lisa’s been watching “Peep Show,” a British show that reminds us of first-person video games.

Nicole has been playing Castle Crashers, Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, Alphabear, and Hearthstone. (Nicole beat her ranked husband in Hearthstone. She gloats a bit.)

Question

Andrew Cameron, who was a fan of GirlFight, reminded us that there’s a contest to name new characters for Super Smash Bros. and he asked what strong female characters we’d like to see . Andrew says, “I like the women racers in FZERO GX; they are equals to the male racers and are dressed appropriately.” We have some other suggestions.

Linda learned to play video games as a way to connect with her teenaged kids, and then she learned to love video games for their own sake. At Pixelkin she wrangles the business & management side of things, writes posts as often as she can, reaches out on the social media, and does the occasional panel or talk. She lives in Seattle, where she writes, studies, plays video games, spends time with her family, consumes vast quantities of science fiction, and looks after her small cockapoo. She loves to hear from people out there. You can read more about her at her website, Linda Breneman.com or her family foundation's website, ludusproject.org.
