Limited Run Games announced that Rugrats: Retro Rewind, a retro game compilation, will release on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. Digital versions will release on May 15, while physical pre-orders for the Standard and Deluxe Editions will be open between May 1 and May 31.

Rugrats: Retro Rewind features six classic Rugrats-licensed video games that released between 1998 and 2001:

  • Rugrats: Search for Reptar – The Rugrats’ first foray into gaming was a 3D platforming game designed for the original PlayStation in 1998.
  • The Rugrats Movie – A 2D platformer inspired by The Rugrats Movie, originally released on Game Boy in ’98, then Game Boy Color in ’99. Both versions are included.
  • Rugrats: Time Travelers – Another 2D platformer designed for the Game Boy Color, and a follow-up to The Rugrats Movie, with the babies traveling through time.
  • Rugrats: Studio Tour – A follow-up to the early 3D platforming of Search for Reptar, released in 1999 for the PlayStation, with the babies exploring different themes of a movie studio.
  • Rugrats in Paris: The Movie – another Rugrats game based on a movie, this 2000 game was released for Game Boy Color, PlayStation, and Nintendo 64. The console version is similar to Studio Tour, while the handheld version is a side-scrolling platformer. Both versions will be included.
  • Rugrats: Castle Capers – released in 2001 for the Game Boy Advance, 2D platformer Castle Capers is one of the higher rated games of this compilation.

Expect the usual assortment of modern features for retro releases, including CRT filters, save anywhere and rewind options, and a music player.

The handheld titles still look cute and bright, but oof those PS1 games and their early 3D visuals don’t hold up nearly as well. Each of these games was explicitly designed for children and younger players at the time.

Retro Rewind is also getting a Deluxe Edition, which includes a PS1-inspired game case, soundtrack, Reptar keychain, and stickers.

The Rugrats, a powerhouse Nickelodeon cartoon from the 90s and 2000s, inspired over a dozen video games within a short time span of ’98 to around 2005.

Nearly 20 years later, Limited Run published an all-new, retro-inspired Rugrats game, Adventures in Gameland, in 2024. Our review found it nostalgic but exceedingly difficult.

Rugrats: Retro Rewind will release on May 15 on PlayStation and Switch, with physical versions to follow.
