One year after announcing LEGO Education Science, LEGO Education has announced a new classroom curriculum around teaching modern computer science. LEGO Education Computer Science & AI is a hands-on teaching kit that teaches computer science and fosters “AI literacy, creativity, and student agency.”
Kits are designed for grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8, and feature all the LEGO bricks, hardware, cables, and lessons for teachers and students. The kits include screen-free lessons using physical bricks, and lessons that combine bricks with the digital LEGO Education Coding Canvas. The Coding Canvas is a free web-based app available on a browser or on iOS. It offers block-based coding with word and icon blocks.
Using the LEGO-powered teaching kits, students build and experiment with AI, understanding how the technology works, and learning to use it responsibility.
“The future will be led by children who don’t just use technology — they understand it, question it, and ultimately build a better world with it,” said Andrew Sliwinski, Head of Product Experience, LEGO Education. “AI presents incredible opportunities for learning, but it must be introduced with intention and care. This is why we developed a solution for the classroom grounded in the LEGO Group’s values of child safety, privacy, and well-being. With LEGO Education Computer Science & AI, children engage with AI to build their understanding of how the technology works in a safe and responsible way.”
To learn the needs of schools and educators in computer science, LEGO conducted a survey of 1,800 teachers and administrators in the US and other countries last fall. Over 70% of teachers agreed that computer science is critical for students, while 46% find computer science a difficult subject to teach. Each kit has enough supplies for a group of four students working together. The LEGO Education Computer Science & AI kit is priced at $339.95 per kit (or about $84.98 per student), and will begin shipping this April.
