Paradox ARC, the indie publishing label of Paradox Interactive, have released SquareNite’s indie strategy game, Darfall, on Steam PC ($24.99).

Darfall is a real-time strategy — wait, an RTS? In the year of our MOBA 2025?

Once upon a time, say the 90s and early 2000s, real-time strategy games were all the rage, led by Warcraft, Command & Conquer, and their many copycats. Fast-forward today and the genre is all but dead, staked by the much more popular and highly competitive MOBA genre (which ironically began as a Warcraft 3 mod, *sigh*).

Darfall is described as a “hero-based city-building survival game,” which is a funny way of avoiding the dreaded “RTS” term.

To be fair, Darfall isn’t just a Warcraft clone. Players control a powerful hero with an army and a village. During the day, players can explore the surrounding area, gather resources, expand their village, and prepare the defenses. All the RTS checkboxes!

At night, the village is besieged by waves of undead enemies to test your defenses. Or overrun and kill everyone.

Darfall includes a story-driven campaign, as well as an endless Survival mode, and a Scenario Editor for making custom maps. Players can also choose among multiple fantasy hero classes, such as mage, beastmaster, or paladin.

Darfall is available now on Steam PC.
