With some major help from beloved Hollywood actor Paul Rudd, Nintendo has recreated a classic commercial from the early 90s — which also starred Paul Rudd!
A 30+ year callback!
The original ad debuted in 1991 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It stars Rudd in his very first acting appearance (even predating his IMDB credits), sans dialogue.
In the commercial, Rudd plays the then-new SNES while it’s connected to a giant Drive-In movie screen. Lightning flashes as we see several games, and a flock of interested gamers soon follows.
Nintendo helpfully uploaded the original ad on their YouTube channel:
The new version features a slightly older Paul Rudd playing Mario Kart World with friends and family on the Switch 2. The ad shows off the new GameChat feature, as well as the optional Switch 2 camera, to integrate video and voice into the game.
Rudd actually gets to speak and narrate the commercial this time around, and personally calls out the original ad. His dorky energy is impossible not to love.
It’s a fun commercial, and a hilarious callback with an actor who obviously became much more famous over the years.
As a side note, I’d love for Nintendo to upload more classic commercials.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will release on June 5. Pre-orders being April 24.
