During the March 2025 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo unveiled a surprising all-new entry to an older life sim series: Tomodachi Life. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is scheduled to release in 2026 on Nintendo Switch (and certainly the Switch 2).

The announcement trailer is a bit surreal, including a bit where a Mii invades another Mii’s dreams, which is apparently something that can happen in-game. Also, unsettling synthesized voices, a hallmark of the series.

Living the Dream is the first new entry in the Tomodachi Life series in over a decade. The previous game, simply titled Tomodachi Life, released in 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS. Despite middling reviews, it went on to become one of the best-selling games on the Nintendo 3DS, selling over 6.7 million copies.

In Tomodachi Life, players create custom Mii avatars and manage their activities and social relationships. Miis can even get married and have children.

It’s sort of a more simplistic version of The Sims. The new game is set on a tropical island — how very Animal Crossing of them!

Although the Tomodachi Life series has been dormant, Miis have surfaced in other games, such as turn-based RPG Miitopia in 2017 (re-released on Switch in 2021). Customizable Mii fighters also appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018).

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream will launch in 2026.
