Nintendo just stealth-dropped a big announcement for JRPG fans: Xenoblade Chronicles X is getting a remaster! Xenoblades Chronicles X: Definitive Edition will release on Switch on March 20, 2025.

In Xenoblade Chronicles X, humans have fled Earth to arrive on a hostile alien planet, full of monstrous creatures and dangerous enemies. Players create a custom avatar and join an elite team to help defend the future colony of New Los Angeles from enemies outside — and within.

The large, MMO-like open world features five sprawling continents. In would be a lot to run around in — thankfully Chronicles X introduces big ol’ robot and vehicle mechs that players can pilot. And eventually even fly.

Xenoblade Chronicles X was the follow-up to the original Xenoblade Chronicles, which received an excellent remaster on Switch in 2020.

XCX originally released on Wii U in 2015, and was criminally underrated. While the story isn’t super memorable (and had a weird ending), the increased roster of characters, humongous world, awesome hub city, and cool giant mechs made it one of my favorite RPGs of the era.

The Definitive Edition will feature enhanced visuals, “added story elements,” and multiplayer-specific missions. Players can take on Global Nemesis Battles through online gameplay, and download and recruit other player’s avatars into their party.

With Chronicles X’s release, all four main Xenoblade RPGs will be available on Switch. Nice!

Xenoblade Chronicles X will release on March 20, 2025. The Definitive Edition is not yet rated, but the original was T for Teen.
