An important post on the Minecraft website revealed a new update schedule for the best-selling game moving forward. Instead of releasing one major content update each summer, players will see smaller “free game drops” throughout the year.

These smaller updates actually began back in December 2023 with the new bats, and wolf armor in April of this year.

“Minecraft is a game that has been growing since it first released, and alongside these regular content drops, our developers will be focusing on long-term initiatives to ensure we can continue to evolve Minecraft long into the future,” writes Ryan Cooper.

Long-time players will recognize these smaller updates used to be the norm — over ten years ago!

Minecraft is also currently in development for PlayStation 5: “Over the coming year, we’ll also be exploring ways to improve Minecraft’s multiplayer experience and make it easier to find and connect with friends.”

The showcase stream Minecraft Live is also changing, expanding to twice a year, and retiring the mob vote.

Minecraft celebrated its 15th birthday earlier this year. The best-selling game is available on every console, but only through backwards compatibility for Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. The last major release was for the New Nintendo 3DS in 2017!

Minecraft is also getting a live action film, coming to theaters April 4, 2025.
