The Marvel Rivals closed beta test continues this week, and the hero shooter has recently added Thor and Jeff. Shockingly (or perhaps not), the meme-worthy dog-shark has completely overshadowed the God of Thunder. My kids demand I play Jeff’s reveal teaser (above) on repeat.

Wait, who is Jeff?

Jeff the Land Shark is an adorable four-legged shark from Marvel comics. Originally appearing alongside the jokey Gwen Poole in West Coast Avengers, Jeff became a breakout companion. He starred in his own “It’s Jeff” series of digital Infinity Comics on Marvel Unlimited, winning multiple awards.

The Infinity Comics are funny, have zero dialogue, and are perfect for kids.

In Marvel Rivals, Jeff is a Strategist, and supports the team through healing and crowd control. Jeff can drop healing bubbles for his teammates, but his true power lies in his Ultimate ability, transforming into a larger shark, gobbling up his foes, and spewing them somewhere else. Often knocking them out of the zone for multiple KOs. Wow!

Like Rocket, he also has a unique team-up with Groot, climbing on the big tree’s shoulders for maximum cuteness.

And yes, he hums the theme from Jaws while swimming through the world.

Jeff joins the roster of 20+ heroes and anti-heroes battling over control points and escorting payloads. Marvel Rivals does not yet have a release date, but it’s coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It’s rated T for Teen.
