Cyan Worlds (yes, the same original Myst-developer Cyan Worlds) released the first gameplay trailer for the remake of Riven. It’s launching later this year on PC, VR, and consoles.
Riven is a 4K, fully 3D remake of the original 1997 classic first-person puzzle game.
Riven is famously the sequel to Myst, one of the most revolutionary and popular puzzle games of the 1990s, renowned for its immersive world and story, deep puzzles, and wondrous visual style.
The story is set after Myst, with the players working for the newly freed Atrus in a new world to free his wife. As in the first Myst, players explore this new world of five islands, and complete puzzles by manipulating objects, without the need for inventory management.
The remake utilizes Unreal Engine 5, unlocking full 3D exploration over the original’s screen-to-screen presentation, and designed for VR and non-VR at the same time.
The remake also includes more puzzles, a bigger story, and new, fully voiced characters. Actors Shannon Woodward (The Last of US Part 2), and author Ronan Farrow (From Up on Poppy Hill) joins the cast. Actor-comedian Lauren Gamiel plays the role of Catherine, Atrus’ wife, while Atrus himself is once-again performed by Cyan Worlds CEO and co-founder, Rand Miller.
“It’s such a thrill to be able to perform this role. And I love and respect that Cyan is taking this classic and not just remaking it, which is already exciting, but putting all this additional inspiration in it and specifically focusing on character,” said Ronan Farrow. “I think part of what made Riven something formative for me as a kid is that it is so character-driven.”
Riven will release later this year. The original Myst and its sequels are found on GOG, and the Myst remake is on Steam.
