This week’s PlayStation State of Play was all about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, including the reveal of a two-part demo, and an extended 10-minute gameplay trailer.

Square Enix will release the highly anticipated RPG “requel” on February 29. Eager players can jump in now with the release of the “Fall of a Hero in Nibelheim” demo, available to download now on PlayStation 5.

The demo features a flashback sequence that delves into the backstory between protagonist Cloud and the villainous Sephiroth. The story takes place five years before the events of Final Fantasy 7, as the young soldiers investigate a monstrous outbreak near Cloud’s hometown. Players get a unique opportunity to play as Sephiroth during the flashback demo.

But that’s not all!

Later this month, the demo will unlock an entire second part with “Dawn of a New Era in Junon,” on February 21. This second part will showcase the game’s open-world around the town of Junon.

The playable area for the demo has been altered and compacted to make it easier to navigate. That unfortunately means progress made during the demo will not carry over to the full game.

But players who have save data from the demo will receive some in-game goodies when the full game releases: a Kupo Charm and Survival Set.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is the sequel to 2020’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and continues to three-part remake of the classic RPG. It’s out Feb. 29 on PlayStation 5, and rated T for Teen.
