Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios have announced the next game in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. Mortal Kombat 1 will reboot the series (again) when it launches on September 19 for PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.

The story picks up following the end of Mortal Kombat 11, where Liu Kang became the Fire God. So technically a sequel, but it takes place in a world literally created by the godly Liu Kang, and features re-imagined version of infamous fighters.

Confirmed fighters who appear in the trailer include Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Katana, Mileena, and Shang Tsung. Shang Tsung will be exclusive to players who pre-order. Pre-orders on PS5 and XSX will also receive access to the beta, will begin in August.

In addition to the new campaign mode, Mortal Kombat 1 promises a new fighting system, multiple game modes, and brand new fatalities. MK1 will also introduce a new feature called Kameo Fighters. According to the official FAQ: “Kameo Fighters are a unique roster of partner characters to assist during matches. These characters are chosen separately from the main roster of fighters.”

Mortal Kombat 1 has not yet been rated by the ESRB. As one of the infamously goriest gaming series around, we’re confident it’s going to garner at least an M for Mature rating!

Mortal Kombat 1 will release on September 19th. Early access is available for Premium and Kollector’s Edition versions, and will begin September 14.
