During The Game Awards 2022, beloved indie studio Supergiant Games revealed their first ever sequel — and obviously it’s for their most successful and popular game, Hades. Hades 2 will first launch in Early Access on PC sometime in 2023.
Hades 2 is a direct sequel taking place after the events of the original game. This time players play as Melinoë, the Princess of the Underworld, and sister to Zagreus. Like her brother, she’s immortal, and journeys through the Underworld through repeated attempts and failures. Her quest is nothing short of defeating the titan Chronos, who controls time itself (and is also her grandfather, I think?).
Thankfully the sequel reacquaints us with the many gods and goddesses of the Greek pantheon as allies and power-ups. The sequel promises new locations, challenges, and upgrades, and a darker look at Greek mythology and its relationship to witchcraft.
Hades 2 has been in development since 2021, and is Supergiant Games’ first sequel. The Hades 2 FAQ mentions why the studio decided to tackle a sequel:
With each of our projects over the years, we’ve aimed to take on a new challenge that stretched our team’s creativity and taught us more about how to make games well together. One such challenge we’ve long considered was to try and make a sequel that could somehow re-capture the sense of wonder and delight of its predecessor. Hades II, with its new perspective on a shadowy and alluring aspect of Greek myth, is our opportunity to find out. We get to keep building on foundational ideas that have captivated us since Supergiant’s early days, while expanding the world of Hades in a variety of ways we find very exciting, and hope you will, too.
Early access date, release date, and platforms are yet to be announced.
