During Sony’s most recent State of Play, developer Guerilla Games showed off 14 minutes of gameplay from Horizon Forbidden West, which is due later this year exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

The gameplay clip, captured on PlayStation 5, is our first real look at the highly anticipated sequel to 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn, an open-world action game that takes place in a post-apocalyptic Earth populated by free-roaming robot dinosaurs.

Protagonist Aloy returns, armed with her signature bow, spear, and enough tools and gadgets to make Batman jealous. The sequel is set six months after the first game, as Aloy and her friends have traveled west to the ruins of California to find technology that can help cure a deadly blight spreading across the world.

In the clip presented during State of Play, Aloy’s friend Erend has been captured by a new villainous faction, the Tenakth tribe. The Tenakth have acquired the ability to override and ride machines, like Aloy. Aloy deploys several new abilities and tools in her race to free her friend, evade a pack of dino-raptors, and defeat the captors, including a Pullcaster grappling hook, a Shieldwing glider, and a Diving Mask to explore underwater.

The new robotic threat shown in the clip is the Tremortusk, a large mammoth-like robot that can fire lasers and stomp its feet. Aloy has to use all her skills and abilities to defeat it.

The visuals and gameplay look amazing. Unfortunately we still don’t have a confirmed release date, but Guerilla stated that “development is on track and we will have an update for you very soon.”
