During the PlayStation Showcase event, Square Enix officially announced the next game in the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy 16. The single player RPG is being developed by producer Naoki Yoshida (Final Fantasy 14) and director Hiroshi Takai (Final Fantasy 14) for the PlayStation 5.

“From the establishment of an all new development environment, to learning the ins-and-outs of the PS5, the team and I have taken on countless challenges during our journey to bring you the sixteenth chapter in the storied Final Fantasy franchise,” said Takai. “And though we’re pouring our hearts and souls into this project each and every day, it may still be some time before we can get it into your hands. However, I promise it will be worth the wait!”

Square Enix isn’t revealing any information beyond what’s seen in the trailer. Yoshida is teasing another big reveal sometime next year, for both Final Fantasy 16, as well as Final Fantasy 14, which is an ongoing MMORPG.

The most recent single player Final Fantasy game was Final Fantasy 15, which released in 2016 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and 2018 on PC.

The only other single player Final Fantasy game to release during the PS4/XBO era was Final Fantasy 7 Remake last year. Both games were well-received by RPG fans and sold millions of copies. Final Fantasy 7 Remake was one of the best-selling PS4 games, selling over 3 million copies in a matter of days.
