Sony is airing their inaugural State of Play video series this afternoon at 2 pm Pacific/5 pm Eastern. The broadcast will air on the official PlayStation social media channels, including Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook.

State of Play is a new video series that will give updates and announcements for PlayStation games and products, including new game reveals. The first episode will show upcoming PS4 and PS VR games, peppered with new trailers, announcements, and gameplay footage.

If you’re thinking this sounds a lot like Nintendo’s Direct video series, you are right. This series may indicate a new direction for Sony.

Sony previously announced they are not attending E3 this year for the first time since its inception in 1995. With the State of Play, it appears they are following Nintendo’s lead of offering pre-recorded videos rather than stage presentations.

Since 2013 Nintendo has skipped a live stage presentation at E3 in favor of broadcasting a Nintendo Direct video. As of yet there’s been no indication that Sony will host another State of Play during E3. We’re also not sure how often Sony will release State of Play videos. Nintendo typically hosts three or four main Nintendo Directs per year, with about two Indie announcements per year, and the occasional special franchise specific Directs, like Pokémon.

Sony’s State of Play will air today at 2 pm Pacific/5 pm Eastern.
